Installation & Operating Requirements
=====================================

Altera recommends the following system configuration for Linux
workstations:

- Pentium III or later Linux workstation running Red Hat
Enterprise Linux 3.0 or Enterprise 3.0 64-bit or Red Hat
   Enterprise Linux 4.0 or Enterprise 4.0 64-bit
- ISO 9990-compatible CD-ROM drive
- Color monitor
- USB port for use with the USB Blaster programming cable
- A valid X-Windows display, which is required only while
   running the Quartus II software
- A valid Window Manager. The following Window Managers are
supported by the Quartus II software in GUI mode:
KDE version included in Red Hat distribution
Gnome version included in Red Hat distribution
If you experience difficulties when using an unsupported
window manager, set the QUARTUS_MWWM environment variable to
"allwm" to allow the Quartus II software to determine the
   most compatible mode
- Web browser software with an Internet connection, which is
required to receive notifications about new service packs and
   upgrades
- GNU gcc compiler and make tools are required to install the
ByteBlasterMV kernel driver. The following RPMs
   (Red Hat modules) are recommended:
      gcc-2.96-81
      make-3.79.1-5
      binutils-2.10.91.0.2-3
      kernel-headers-2.4.2-2
You can verify if an RPM is already installed by typing
"rpm -q <name>" at a command prompt. For example "rpm -q gcc"
will tell you if a gcc RPM is installed
The RPMs can be downloaded from the Red Hat web site at the
   following URL: www.redhat.com

FLEXlm Software Requirements
============================

The Quartus II software uses the FLEXlm license server software
to support network (multiuser) licensing. If it is not
installed, the Quartus II installation process installs it
automatically. However, if you already have FLEXlm license
server software installed for an application other than the
Quartus II or MAX+PLUS(R) II software, you should verify that
the version is 8.0 or later.

NOTE: This procedure is not necessary if you are using a FIXEDPC
(node-locked) license.

To determine the version of the lmgrd and alterad daemons type
the following commands at a command prompt on the computer
running the FLEXlm license server:

   <path to flexlm>/lmgrd -v <Return>
   <path to flexlm>/alterad -v <Return>

If the lmgrd and/or alterad daemons are not from the FLEXlm
software version 8.0 or later, both the lmgrd and alterad daemons
must be upgraded with the versions provided in this installation
of the Quartus II version 6.0 software. The current version of the
daemons are installed in the following location:

   <path to Quartus II 6.0>/linux/alterad
   <path to Quartus II 6.0>/linux/lmgrd

To upgrade, first make a backup copy of the lmgrd and alterad
executables you are currently using. Then copy the new versions
of the files to the computer running the license server over the
daemons you are currently using (this may require shutting down
the license server software).
In addition to the daemons, also copy the FLEXlm software utility
"lmutil" from the Quartus II 6.0 installation directory to the
license server computer. Then restart the license server by
typing the following commands at a command prompt:

   <path to flexlm>/lmutil lmdown -c <path to license file> <Return>
   <path to flexlm>/lmgrd -c <path to license file>
      [ -l <path to optional log> ] <Return>

Please see the Quartus II Software version 6.0 Installation &
Licensing manual for more information on upgrading the license
server software tools.

Installing the Software on a Linux Workstation
================================================

To install the Quartus II software on a workstation running
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3.0 or Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.0,
follow these steps:

To mount the CD-ROM drive and install the Quartus II software and
device information on a Linux workstation, follow these steps:

NOTE: You must have superuser or "root" privileges to mount and
unmount the CD-ROM drive.

1. If the /mnt/cdrom directory does not exist, type the following
   command at the command prompt:

   mkdir /mnt/cdrom <Return>

2. Insert the Quartus II Design Software for Linux Workstations
(Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3.0 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.0
Only) CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive.

3. To mount the CD-ROM drive, type the following command at the
   command prompt:

   /bin/mount /mnt/cdrom <Return>

4. To install the Quartus II software, type the following command
   at the command prompt:

   /mnt/cdrom/install <Return>

You are guided through the installation procedure.

5. To unmount the CD-ROM drive, you must make sure no one is
accessing the directory structure at or below the cdrom
directory. If another user is using the CD-ROM drive, you may
   receive the following message:

   umount:/mnt/cdrom : Device busy

To determine whether you are accessing the CD-ROM drive
yourself, type the following command at a command prompt:

   pwd <Return>

You should see the / prompt on your screen. If you do not, you
should type cd / <Return> again.

6. When prompted by the install script, insert the Quartus II
Device Information for UNIX & Linux Workstations CD-ROM into
   your CD-ROM drive.

7. Repeat steps 3-5 to mount and install the Quartus II device
information and unmount the CD-ROM drive.

Refer to the "Quartus II Installation & Licensing for UNIX and
Linux Workstations" manual for additional information about
installing and licensing the Quartus II software.
