From falcon at freecalypso.org Sat Jan 6 09:19:51 2024 From: falcon at freecalypso.org (Mychaela Falconia) Date: Sat, 06 Jan 2024 01:19:51 -0800 Subject: GSM class reminder Message-ID: <20240106091958.A5CB13740331@freecalypso.org> Hello class, Just a reminder, our next videoconference session will be a little less than 9 hours from now, at 18:00 UTC which is also 10:00 USA Pacific Standard Time. Same Jitsi videoconference platform as before: https://meet.jit.si/moderated/de280e2299acb289ffa38669f78ac91f05ceec6da5062ce761a35a0f32cd7a6c The primary topic for this session will be GSM frequency bands: which frequencies are usable for GSM, which bands work better for old phones, the difference between uplink and downlink frequencies, and how different bands overlap. Those of you who have an RF Explorer instrument will get the most benefit out of this class, as we'll be able to get into a hands-on portion (scanning your local RF environment for possible spots where a little rebel GSM BTS can operate), but even if you don't have this instrument yet, you will still benefit from the theory portion of the class, which we'll do before the hands-on portion. (You always have to know the theory first!) I look forward to seeing many of you soon! Sincerely, Mother Mychaela aka Mrs. Falconia From falcon at freecalypso.org Sat Jan 6 20:29:49 2024 From: falcon at freecalypso.org (Mychaela Falconia) Date: Sat, 06 Jan 2024 12:29:49 -0800 Subject: Class notes from this morning Message-ID: <20240106202957.7015A3740188@freecalypso.org> Hello dear students, This morning's GSM class had a low attendance unfortunately, but here are the presentation notes from today: https://www.freecalypso.org/members/falcon/class-notes/freq-pres.pdf This little presentation shows what frequency bands are usable for GSM, how different bands fare in terms of old phone compatibility, where the actual uplink and downlink frequencies are for each band, and how they overlap. The pictures and notes don't say much because the explanatory commentary is intended to be covered interactively in the class. For everyone who missed today, we can go over it in the next session, which is yet to be scheduled. M~
